Two speckled white New Party stoneware storage jars with lids on a kitchen counter, the small one with a red Merry Christmas tag

Confetti in the glaze, cookies in the jar

TP Tami PizzettiFounder

Every kitchen has the jar. The one on the counter that everybody opens on the way past, that is always a little emptier than you left it, and that nobody admits to. Ours are finally here: two ceramic cookie jars with lids, in stoneware, made in Portugal and covered in confetti.

A ceramic cookie jar with confetti in the glaze

The New Party glaze is a warm white with flecks of red, blue, yellow and green scattered through it. On a mug it looks like the morning after a good party. On a jar it gets more room. The speckles run up the body and over the lid, and because they are part of the glaze, they land a little differently on every jar.

The lid sits snug on top, with a loop handle you can lift with one finger while the other hand is already reaching in.

Two stoneware storage jars, two sizes

  • The big jar: 22 cm tall, 18 cm across, about 3.4 litres, €49.90. A whole batch of biscuits, a bag of flour, or enough coffee beans to stop counting.
  • The small jar: 15 cm tall, 11 cm across, €24.90. Sugar, tea, the good salt, the chocolate you hide from yourself.
  • Both: stoneware, made in Portugal, lead and cadmium free, in the same speckled white glaze. Side by side they read as a canister set.
  • Care: hand wash only. Not for the dishwasher or the microwave.

Or maybe a treat jar for your pet?

The small jar makes a good ceramic dog treat jar. It holds a bag of biscuits, it sits on a shelf where a Dog can see it but not reach it, and the lid stays on. Give it a week and nobody will call it the biscuit jar any more.

Cookie jar Christmas gift ideas

A jar is a present that does its own wrapping. Fill it, tie a ribbon round the lid, and long after what was inside is gone, the jar is still on their counter.

  • Homemade biscuits. The classic, and the reason the big jar exists.
  • Cookies in a jar. Layer the dry ingredients for one batch in the small jar and tie the recipe to the handle.
  • Coffee or tea. Beans from a roaster they like, or a loose tea they would not buy for themselves.
  • For the Dog. Treats in the small jar, with the Dog's name on the tag.

How to look after a stoneware storage jar

  • Wash it by hand with warm water and a soft sponge.
  • Let it dry fully before the lid goes back on, so nothing inside goes soft.
  • Keep it out of the dishwasher and the microwave.

What is the best ceramic cookie jar with a lid?

One with a lid that sits snug and a body wide enough for your hand. Our big jar is stoneware, 22 cm tall and 18 cm across, holds about 3.4 litres, and has a loop handle on the lid you can lift with one finger. It is made in Portugal in the speckled New Party glaze.

What sizes are the New Party stoneware storage jars?

Two. The big jar is 22 cm tall and 18 cm across, about 3.4 litres, at €49.90. The small jar is 15 cm tall and 11 cm across, at €24.90. Both come in the same speckled white glaze, so they work as a pair.

Can I use a ceramic jar for dog treats?

Yes. The small jar is a good size for dog treats: big enough for a bag of biscuits, small enough to sit on a shelf out of reach. The glaze is lead and cadmium free, and the lid keeps the Dog's nose out of it.

Are stoneware storage jars dishwasher and microwave safe?

These two are not. Wash them by hand with warm water and a soft sponge, and let them dry fully before the lid goes back on. They are made to stay on the counter, so they never need to go near the microwave.

What can I put in a cookie jar as a Christmas gift?

Homemade biscuits are the classic. Coffee beans, a good loose tea, the dry ingredients for a batch of cookies layered in the small jar, or dog treats with a name tag all work too. Tie a ribbon round the lid and the jar is the wrapping.

Where are the jars made?

In Portugal, in stoneware, like the rest of our pieces. The speckles are part of the glaze, so the pattern lands a little differently on every jar.
