The colour was a mistake. Two years ago a batch of Cloud mugs came out of the kiln pink, with lilac creeping up from the base, and pink was not what anybody had asked for. We stood around the trolley looking at it, and somebody said it looked like Halloween. Which it did. Which, on its own, is not a joke yet.
A kiln has opinions
A batch of ceramics that comes out different from the drawing is not unusual and not a crisis. Glazes move. Colour lands a tone away from where it was aimed. Most of the time those pieces simply do not go on the website — they go to our shop in Porto, which is where all of our almosts end up, and that is the end of the story.
This one did not go to Porto, because of what the colour was doing. Pink across the top, lilac rising from the foot, the two meeting somewhere around the middle without a line between them. We called it Pinklac, which is not a poetic name — it is just the two words pushed together, the way you name something before you have decided whether to keep it.
And it did look like Halloween. Not the Halloween of plastic cobwebs; the one where everything is a little uncanny and nothing is actually frightening. A dusk colour. The problem was that a colour is not a collection. Put that mug on a shelf in October and it is a pink mug in October.
The twist was a cat
What the colour was missing was one small dark shape, and it took two of them.
Meow puts a black cat on one of the clouds, sitting, tail down, entirely unbothered by the weather. Bat sends a bat between two of them, wings out, mid-crossing. Each is about the size of a thumbnail on a 500 ml ceramic mug, and that is the whole intervention. No cobwebs. No dripping letters. No face.
Restraint turned out to be the hard part. Every year somebody sketches a version with a witch's hat on the handle, and every year it loses to the cat. The rule we ended up with is that one dark shape is a punchline and three is a theme, and we are not making a theme.
Cute, not creepy
Orange and black are not compulsory. They are a habit that has been repeated for long enough to feel like a rule — and the third Halloween colour, the one nobody lists, has always been purple. Which is roughly what was rising up the side of that batch.
Ours is the other version: pink, gold, a ghost in heart-shaped sunglasses, a cat who has clearly never frightened anybody in its life. Nothing in it is trying to make you jump. It is a mug you can hand to a six-year-old and a mug you can put on a desk in an open-plan office, which the plastic-cobweb version is not. It also makes a Halloween gift that nobody has to pretend to like in November.
A Halloween you can use in March
This is the part we did not plan and like the most. A Halloween that is not scary does not expire on the first of November.
Strip the date off it and what is left is a pink mug with a cat asleep on a cloud. That works in February. The bat is harder to argue with in spring, but only slightly — it is a small animal crossing a sky, and it has been doing that all year regardless of what the calendar says. The first eight we ever sold went out in March — eight separate orders, eight different people, one mug each, none of them buying for a party. We took that as the collection answering the question for us.
So it is not a decoration you put in a box in November. It is a mug that happens to have been born in October.
The two candles are mugs in disguise
The candles come around once a year too. Cannes at Sunrise is pale and gilded — rose, jasmine and musk. Harlem at Midnight is black as the night it is named after, with neroli, tobacco and vanilla. The bats change with the vessel: gold on the pale one, white on the black one, the same small shape reading the opposite way round. Both carry 250 g of natural soy wax and a cotton wick, and both burn for about fifty hours.
Then the part that matters. The vessel is not a container the candle came in; it is one of our mugs, fired in the same workshop with a food-safe glaze. When the wax is finished, lift out the last of it, wash the piece, and put it on the shelf with the others. A candle that ends as breakfast is a better object than a candle that ends as glass in a bin.

How to set a pink Halloween table
None of this needs a budget, and almost none of it needs to be bought. Most pink Halloween decor is the ordinary October shopping list, pointed twenty degrees away from where it usually goes.
- Paint the pumpkins. Matte pink spray, one coat, real gourds or foam ones. Leave the stalks — they dry to a grey that does more work than any glitter.
- One white sheet does the rest. A ghost needs a sheet and a pair of legs. It does not need a face; the moment you draw eyes on it, it becomes a costume instead of a joke.
- Keep the frightening props small. Two plastic spiders on a tablecloth read as funny. Twenty read as a haunted house, and then you are back to orange.
- Reach for gold instead of orange. A gilt mirror, a pearl belt, a brass candlestick. Gold sits beside pink the way orange never quite does.
- Let exactly one thing be black. The cat. The bat. The candle. One dark shape is a punchline; three is a theme.
- Smoke is a prop, not a drink. Dry ice belongs in the cauldron on the floor, not in anything anybody is going to put their mouth on.
Once a year, and then it is gone
We make these once a year, in one small batch, and then we stop. This year's is smaller than usual, and the honest reason is that we were late to our own party. Four pieces: two mugs, two candles. When they are gone the next Halloween is twelve months away, and we would rather that than a cupboard of pink bats in February.
